L-Theanine

Amino Acid · C7H14N2O3 · 174.20 g/mol · CAS 3081-61-6

L-theanine is the amino acid in green tea responsible for that uniquely calm, alert state — it raises alpha brain wave activity and takes the edge off stimulants without sedating you.

Mechanism of Action

L-theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier within ~30 minutes of ingestion. It modulates GABA, dopamine, and serotonin signaling and acutely increases alpha-band EEG activity — the brain wave state associated with relaxed alertness. When combined with caffeine or paraxanthine, it blunts the cardiovascular and anxiogenic side effects while preserving (and in some studies, enhancing) the cognitive benefits.

Benefits

Typical Dose

100-200mg per serving. The classic nootropic stack is 100mg caffeine + 200mg L-theanine. Higher doses (400mg) are used for stress and sleep support.

Safety

L-theanine has an exceptional safety profile. It is found in green tea and consumed daily by hundreds of millions of people. No significant drug interactions or dose-limiting side effects have been established in healthy adults.

FAQ

Why is L-theanine always paired with caffeine?

Caffeine alone tends to produce jitter, elevated heart rate, and a hard crash. L-theanine smooths all three of those without dampening the focus benefit — it’s the most replicated nootropic stack in the literature.

Will L-theanine make me sleepy?

No. L-theanine is calming but not sedating. It promotes relaxed alertness, not drowsiness. Higher evening doses (200-400mg) may modestly improve sleep quality.

Is L-theanine the same as theanine in green tea?

Yes — L-theanine is the naturally occurring isomer in green tea. A typical cup of green tea contains 25-60mg.
